[ad#Adsense 125×125 ATF, right]Every photography beginner or enthusiast that has ever dreamed of selling his/her photos, has stumbled on the subject of creating their own photography portfolio. A photography portfolio is a collection of images that gives your potential clients an idea of your visual style and the quality of the photos that you are capable to deliver. Putting together a photography portfolio used to involve some tedious work of selecting, printing and framing your photos in some leather portfolio. However, today with the help of Portfolio To Go – a cool app for apple ipad and flickr, you could have your portfolio ready in a matter of minutes.
Portfolio To Go is a cool application for apple ipad, that automatically converts your existing flickr account into a powerful photography portfolio, ready to be shown to any customer.
How to put together a photography portfolio using Portfolio To Go
Setting up Portfolio to Go is easy. You input your flickr account name and password, and authorize the app to access your flickr account, and Portfolio to go will retrieve all of your photos and if necessary cache them on ipad. Assuming that you have arranged your photos neatly in sets on your flickr account, portfolio to go will display them nicely in a form of a photo wall with the set title and a brief description followed by thumbnails. That way it is possible to display lots of pictures, and yet easily browse though them. An important thing to highlight, is that all of these photos can be cached locally on a device, which is ideal for wifi only ipads. It is a matter of simple sync and go, without the need to worry if there will be an Internet connection at the customer’s premises, making Portfolio to go a truly mobile app.
It really pays off to have your photos neatly arranged in sets on flickr, as portfolio to go will allow you to customize the photos that you would like to show to your potential customer by selecting which sets to display and which to hide. Once you select a set you would like to view, the app will display the first photo of the set on ipad’s screen, with a filmstrip of the other photos in a set below. You can manipulate the photos pretty much in a same way as ipad original photo gallery. If you would like to see more details of the photo (including Title and description), you can do so by pressing the small i in the bottom left corner of the screen.
Portfolio to go also allows you to e-mail your portfolio directly to your client from the app itself, and the process is really simple and intuitive. Our only remark is, that your client would need to have an iPad, iPhone, or an iPod Touch in order to download the free Portfolio to go Player app and view the photos. It is also possible to share the photos with your friends on facebook, twitter, send by e-mail, and store them on ipad’s photo gallery.
It is clearly visible that Portfolio To Go has been designed with photography enthusiast in mind, leveraging the advantages of the apple ipad, such as it’s beautiful screen and photo frame appearance to deliver simple, yet powerful portfolio presentation. Simplicity is the name of the game, the user interface is clean and intuitive, and the app is capable of displaying thousands of images (according to it’s author). Since it synchronizes with your flickr account, as long as you update your flickr, your portfolio will be ready to go as well.
We have particularly liked the ability to customize portfolio to each customer’s preferences by including or excluding flickr photo sets, and ability to directly e-mail the portfolio to a client. That being said, the downside of the app is that your client would need to have an iPad, iPhone, or an iPod touch in order to be able to view the portfolio as the photographer intended. At the time of writing this review, there was no PC application for viewing a portfolio which would make this application more appealing and better suited for much broader audience, although we are sure it’s somewhere in the pipeline.
Nevertheless, Portfolio To Go really greatly simplifies the process of creating and maintaining a photography portfolio, and as such well deserves our DPStudent Recommended Award. Portfolio to Go is available for $4,99 from the AppStore.
