99 Ways to Make Money From Your Photos – Book Review
99 Ways to Make Money From Your Photos, is an excellent book that can help you sell your digital photos and make some money from your hobby. Having said that, it’s by no means a magical guide that will sell your photos for you. You will have to do the hard work, but this book will certainly give you some interesting ideas on how to sell photos online and offline, as well as highlight some important tips to help you in your path.
What to expect from the layout & structure of the book ?
When I ordered the book from amazon, I expected the book to be significantly thinner, something pocket like, containing 99 tips briefly explained. I was pleasantly surprised when I uncovered a 330 page heavy full-on manual. Although, admittedly I was a little disappointed when i first glanced the book, seeing no pretty photos in the book, I remembered that you should not judge the book by its cover (or the looks of the contents on a first glance – the cover actually looks pretty good).
99 ways to make money from your photographs is NOT a book about photography, it is a book which purpose is to teach you how to sell your digital photos, and it does exactly that. The book is well organized, and beside each tip there is a brief explanation about:
- how difficult it is with respect to your camera mastery,
- the amount of competition you are facing,
- and the income potential of using such a technique
These information will help you evaluate which tip is most applicable to you, and help you gain better understanding of what are you getting yourself into.
The content of each tip is laid out pretty well. It begins with a brief explanation on what the tip is about, and what resources do you need to start (e.g. to sell images on flickr it illustrates the benefits of a flickr Pro membership). It is then followed by a brief summary and a short how to guide and usually a couple of useful links to check out in the getting started section. Every tip is about 2.5 pages which is by no means a definitive step by step guide, but more of an overview what to watch out for, and pointing in the right direction. I particularly liked “Tips for success” written on the margins containing some additional useful thoughts and opinions. Thumbs up.
About the 99 tips to make money from photos
The tips contained in this book are very good and very useful. Some tips are downright brilliant, and I have shortlisted them on my own “to try” list. Once i give them a go, will share my thoughts on DPStudent, so stay tuned. There are many tips on selling your photos online, as well as offline, so even if you are not very tech savvy, you will still find something to fit your taste.
Although some tips might feel a little repetitive (e.g. when illustrating different websites where you could sell photos online), I would like to take this opportunity to stress that different websites might lean towards different photography products, and this books illustrates the differences nicely. So i would recommend, find a few tips that you feel that might work for you, and then *DO* them. Note that this book relies heavily on your commitment.
The Verdict
I am very happy to have purchased the book and will refer to it often. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is serious and committed enough to do some serious work in order to make some money and by selling some photos.
